Chinese thread books are a form of folk art made by ethnic Chinese groups to hold threads, needles, patterns and other bits & pieces.  The books are folders which contain many ingeniously folded 3-dimensional compartments that unfold layer by layer. Although the books look complicated, they are not difficult to make and can be adapted by adding art and journals.  They can be used for practical storage or as the foundation for artist's books.  We will be making a 13 compartment book which uses various types of pockets.

Gabrielle Lundeen has studied bookbinding with CBBAG for many years.  She is a former librarian who became engrossed in book art.  She is intrigued by the idea of allowing viewers to find materials in books. This has led her to explore methods, such as pockets and folders, of inserting art into books and was pleased to discover "Chinese thread books".
