Chinese thread books are a form of folk art made by ethnic Chinese groups to hold threads, needles, patterns and other bits & pieces. The books are folders that contain many ingeniously folded 3-dimensional compartments that unfold layer by layer. Although the books look complicated, they are not difficult to make and can be adapted by adding art and journals. They can be used for practical storage or as the foundation for artist's books. We will be making a 13-compartment book that uses various types of pockets.

Gabriele Lundeen first encountered CBBAG through Bookbinding I, eight or so years ago. She had just finished the first year at the Ontario College of Art and Design, had decided that further work there was not what she wanted and was looking around for something else as a creative vehicle. She soon became engrossed in making books and is an aspiring book artist. She is a former librarian and management consultant. She is intrigued by the idea of allowing viewers to explore pockets and other enclosures in books.
