Art of the Book 1993

A juried exhibition of the work of members celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild.

Foreward

In 1993 the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild celebrates the tenth anniversary of its founding with The Art of the Book '93. This is the Guild's second major juried exhibition and follows the successful The Art of the Book which opened at the Ontario Crafts Council in September 1988. We are delighted to be now even more closely connected with the OCC and to launch the new exhibition at its splendid premises at 35 McCaul Street in Toronto.

The Guild's aims are to provide contact among those interested in the hand book arts; to provide access to education in the book arts; to promote greater awareness of the book arts by the general public; and to advocate and promote high standards of excellence in the book arts through exhibitions, workshops, lectures and programme meetings, and publications. The Art of the Book '93 meets most of these goals by displaying work of the highest quality to a wide public audience in Toronto, and in Halifax, Winnipeg, Calgary, Vancouver, Ottawa, and Pointe Claire, Quebec, which will also host the exhibition. The examples of bindings, paper decoration, fine printing, paper making, box making, artists' books, and calligraphy each "reveal an enormous variety of inspiration, as is natural with an object as rich in symbolic, historical, and personal meaning as the book" as Adam Smith wrote in the Foreword to the previous exhibition catalogue. These varied articles are offered for your enjoyment and edification, each worthy of your time and study

For an artist, the business of creation and interpretation is often a solitary experience. A life devoted to working in the book arts requires the stimulation of exposure to the work of other artists and to a wider public. This exhibition provides members of the Guild with an opportunity to show their work and to see the work of their colleagues in the same or similar professions. In addition, as members of the Guild come from many other countries as well as Canada, the exhibition offers differing national experiences and techniques.

As a founding member of the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild and its current President, I am delighted to present The Art of the Book '93, organized so well by the Guild's Exhibition Committee which is jointly chaired by Susan Corrigan, Adam Smith, and Shelagh Smith.

THE CANADIAN BOOK

The Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild would like to acknowledge the contribution of a great many people and organizations who have helped make this exhibition a success.

Many Guild members have worked very hard to bring this exhibition to fruition. Thanks to Betty Elliott, Jane Eagan, Ann Douglas, and Judith Welbourn for assisting greatly with the jurying; Jane Eagan for translation; Ann Douglas and Carol Slavik for condition reporting and display mount fabrication; Mary MCIntyre for publicity; Reg Beatty and Adam Smith for computer data entry and organization; Beatrice Stock for fundraising; Rick Miller for catalogue production; Alan Horne for editing; and Franklyn Smith for much help.

The jurors, Glenn Goluska, Susan Warner Keene, and Don Rash, did an exceptional and conscientious job, in what must have been a very difficult task. As well, the 130 members who submitted 272 works for consideration by the jury have our thanks for their support of the Guild's exhibitions programme.

Awards have been generously donated by the Henry N.R. Jackman Foundation, The Japanese Paper Place, Colophon Book Arts Supply, Bookbinder's Warehouse Inc., BookMakers International, TALAS, Woolfitt's Art Enterprises Inc., and two members who have chosen to remain anonymous - we thank them all.

This catalogue has been produced with the assistance of the National Library of Canada to whom we are grateful, and we also thank Andrea Paradis who has been our liaison with the National Library. Diana Patterson and Mary Mcintyre have contributed insightful articles, and the exceptional photography is the work of Thomas Moore. Batten Graphics supplied the filmwork and separations while the Bryant Press supplied the printing and binding; both excellent firms whose assistance we truly appreciate. The Guild gratefully acknowledges the generous financial assistance of the Ontario Government through the Ministry of Culture and Communications and the Ontario Arts Council, the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council, and the Massey Foundation. Finally we would like to thank the members of the Guild who responded generously to our fund raising appeal: it is very much appreciated.

Avant-Propos

________________________________________________

BINDING HAS BEEN DONE, in what is now Canada, since the 17th century. Names of binders, however, are not recorded until the late 18th century, and not until the mid-19th century do we have any count of binders: the 1851 census lists 51 bookbinders in Upper Canada (now Ontario), and 40 in Lower Canada (now Quêbec).

Before about 1820, books were generally bound in small quantities, or to order, mostly in leather. Any decoration would be done by hand after the book was bound. Handcrafted binding, and the design bindings displayed in this exhibition, are still done this way. After 1820 publishers began regularly to bind the entire edition of a book when it was printed, with the designs printed on paper, or stamped into cloth or leather. The decoration was done mostly by machine, and more and more of the actual sewing and making of covers began to be automated. By 1851 binding would have been considerably automated, particularly the design that was imprinted and impressed in the fabric or paper.

What were these first bindings like? It is often difficult to know. We can only assume that we have an example of early Canadian binding on a book printed in Canada, for there is usually no way to know if a book printed in Paris was, in fact, bound in Montreal, for instance. From the evidence available, Canadian bindings show a level of workmanship that is competent, but not extraordinary, and the designs were mainly copied from those of inexpensive books from England and France. The first bindings that are obviously Canadian in appearance seem to have been the edition bindings of directories, statutes, and almanacs from the 19th century, with beavers and maple leaves on the covers.

English publishers began sending books with distinctively Canadian designs, incorporating such features as maple leaves, beavers, and Indians, to make their books, especially children's books and text books, look as if they were made in Canada, when, in fact, they were printed and bound in London. The imitation "Canadian" bindings continued well into the 20th century. The Chronicles of Canada (32 volumes), first published in 1915 in Glasgow, had thin, purple, leather covers, stamped with the Canadian seal surrounded by the words "Chronicles of Canada." Only a decade later the same book appeared in red cloth, published by Glasgow, Brook and Company, and printed by Hunter-Rose in Toronto. A very Similar, but not identical, stamp appears on each cover. One may assume that the first edition was bound, as well as printed, in Scotland, and the second in Canada.

Some portion of the work done by Canadian binders, though how much is not known, was to bind books that had been imported in sheets from England, France, or the United States. The sheets of printed paper, without cardboard, leather, cloth, and thread, were lighter and easier to pack, and kept shipping costs down. The books would then be bound before Canadian sales began.

An important, although relatively modern, instance is carefully documented because it involved a court case. In 1936, Margaret Mitchell's novel Gone with the Wind was printed in the United States, and sheets were sent to Canada for binding and Canadian promotion. Owing to complications of international copyright, which were taken to the High Court of Justice in the Hague, it was argued, that books were considered published in Canada if the book was bound in Canada, and promoted from Canada. It was the opinion of the court that publishing included printing, but Macmillan of Canada showed that the binding of sheets printed elsewhere was a common practice in Canada.

One of the earliest publishers to print and bind Canadian books with attractive bindings using Canadian designs, was William Briggs of Toronto, which flourished from 1880 to the end of the First World War, when it became The Ryerson Press. The Briggs edition bindings are pictorial, handsome, and certainly Canadian. In 1925, Graphic Publishers of Ottawa took up the idea of Canadian designs where Briggs left off. Graphic Publishers and its subsidiaries, Ru-Mi-Lou and Ariston, made books with Canadian words, illustrations, bindings, endpapers, and dust jackets that do considerable honour to the designers, such as Thoreau MacDonald. Who actually bound either Briggs or Graphics Publishers books is not documented. Alas, Graphic Publishers went bankrupt in 1932 as part of The Great Depression.

Canadian binders have a long tradition binding millions of books, both domestic and foreign, and yet they are only just beginning to be recognized. Part of the reason lies in the traditional anonymity of the craft: edition binding was an adjunct to the whole process of publishing, and only the publisher was ordinarily named. The extent of their binding can hardly be known, owing to that provincial notion, common to many countries in the English and French empires, that to stand out as a local product would bring derision.

The art of hand binding returned in England at the end of the 19th century. Design bindings were made for a very small, limited edition of a work; or a distinctive binding might be done of a single copy. In Canada there were few rich collectors to desire such workmanship. It has not been until the mid- to late-20th century that the artistic design of binding has caught the imagination of Canadian book buyers.

Certainly one of the earliest design binders in Canada was Thomas C. Lynton of Ottawa, binder to the Parliamentary Library. The example of his work illustrated in The Bookbinding Trades Journal of 1914 is of Thomas Moore's Irish Melodies "bound in brown levant with inlaid harp in green and gold[;] the border is inlaid in scarlet, and the inner frame presents a very pleasing effect on a blue ground." If Lynton created "Canadian" designs, and if some survived the great fire of 1916, they are not, to my knowledge, documented.

A more original design binder, who bound several books for himself, in original designs that are still avant garde in their appeal. His binding for Ringuet's 30 Arpents (1938) shows the St. Lawrence River flowing diagonally across the cover, with the traditional Québecois long lots, with the farm houses placed near the river's edge. Cormier was trained in France, and his binding is in the French tradition, despite its distinctively Canadian subject.

Cormier neither had customers for his bindings, nor students to study his goals of design in bindings, as this was only one of his many interests in design. The design binders who later arose in Canada came from England, France, Germany, or elsewhere, bringing their training and, at least initially, their traditional subjects. Even now much design binding is an adjunct to editions that have been specially printed; the emphasis is on printing, and paper, relegating binding to a box to hold loose sheets.

Binders are still mainly nameless in Canada, and only recently have bibliographers begun to describe individual copies rather than ideal copies of printed books. With the documentation of individual copies can come more complete description of bindings, especially design bindings. We can hope that more work on the history of binding will be done to give the fine binders now competing in Canada a sense of their past. While by rights Canada should have nearly four hundred years of tradition in book binding, a tradition has, in fact, only just begun. By bringing the art and profession of binding into a public forum where the binders can see each other's work, and where the public can see binding as an art form, a sense of tradition can become established. As you turn the pages in the catalogue that follows you will see examples that are making history in Canadian book arts, including one of Canada's oldest art forms, binding.

A binding by Pierre Ouvrard, done in 1987. The text alternates with graphic images of toads, and the binding has been done in accordion fashion so that it is possible to mix the green cloth cover with the black images of the toads. The label on the binding is set into the board and is printed on hand-made paper with green flecks in it (of grass or something that looks like it). See Unique or Limited Edition Bindings. An exhausting but enjoyable weekend.

The most confusing and frustrating category was that of Artists' Books, which needs clarification or maybe even division into two categories (Books by Artists & Livres d'artistes?). But certainly some guidelines are needed for those submitting work. As it was, it seemed a catch-all for books that fit in no other category or should probably not have been entered in the first place. Encompassing everything from mass-produced trade paperbacks, to boring blank books, to exciting blank books (which ended up moved into Fine Binding), to handmade photo albums with or without artistically-redeeming-value, to lavish livres d'artiste: this category made comparisons almost impossible. Also, it's the one category where one is most forgiving of less-than-perfect technique: it would be nice to see more fun and experimentation, more zaniness.

But, all in all, tables loaded with wonderful objects that it was a pleasure to handle and that make me eager to finally get my presses moved and start printing again. And two co-jurors, Susan and Don, who were a pleasure to work with.

It is fascinating to me that, in an electronic age when, from time to time, the demise of the book form is predicted, this exhibition attracted so many entries. The fact that the category of Artists' Books was by far the largest suggests that the potential of the book for communicating in a very particular way is far from being exhausted and is, in fact, appealing to more and more individuals.

Selecting the requisite number of pieces for exhibition was often difficult because of the generally high quality of the entries, and given more space in the catalogue and in the touring crates we could probably have included several more. This is one of the frustrations of the juror (and, I am sure, the exhibition organizer). In making tough choices, I was guided by the apparent intention of the work, the quality of design or concept, and the skill with which the work had been carried out.

The book arts today embrace diverse traditions, skills, and intentions, and consequently bring together creative people from vastly different areas of the visual arts: printmakers, photographers, papermakers, sculptors, calligraphers, textile/fibre artists, paper decorators and, of course, bookbinders. The exhibition reflects this rich diversity and will, I hope, confirm for the viewer that the book is alive and well and possibly even more interesting than previously imagined.

While being asked to act as one of the judges for this show was very flattering, the actual jurying process could generously be described as challenging. Exhausting also comes to mind as an appropriate adjective. This year there were twice as many entries as for the fifth anniversary exhibition, and the overall quality of submissions was high. Thus, to edit a field of 280 works down to about 80 was a rigourous task, not to be undertaken by the faint of heart. All joking aside, the members of CBBAG have made it possible to mount a definitive exhibition of current book arts, and should be proud of their achievement.

As an artist, I work with an awareness and respect for poetry, visual art, and the craft of bookbinding. The book form allows words, images, and materials to interact cohesively. When a book is picked up, handled, and read it invites a response to the gap between conception and experience; it speaks of a journey from here to there.

As a hand bookbinder, I enjoy the everyday practice of craft and the chance to teach it to others.

Exsultate Jubilate
1988 Calligraphy/Calligraphie 56 x 69 cm
Painted inscription in gouache, the text is a Quaker Hymn and Mozart's Exultate Jubilate.

The words in the centre panel are the first verse of a Quaker hymn. The words of the Exsultate itself are not directly parallel but they are, I believe, complementary:

   Rejoise, shout,

   o ye blessed souls,

   singing sweet hymns;

   responding to your song

the skies sing psalms with me.

Canson Ingres paper, moss size, gouache.                                                        Papier Canson Ingres, carragheen, gouache.

My passion for marbling grew out of a desire to use it as an expressive element in my bindings which, in turn, led to making larger display pieces.

I love to use traditional methods and materials in modern ways. I fight to keep books in all their aspects central to our culture.

1992 Fine Binding/Reliure d'art 29 x 24 x 5.3 cm
French technique binding, leather spine with decorative paper.

Bookbinding is an art of great beauty at the service of the book. It demands maturity and humility. After more than twenty years it is

with the same pleasure and anxiety that I approach the book for

which I am starting to think of the cover design. The paper, typography, text, and the illustrations first influence me in the conception of the design. The whole, as an "ensemble" must value

the book and its message. My personal way of using the ancient technique of paste paper allows me to realize an original and affordable binding in harmony with the book and its value. I like to

use the French technique of laced-in binding as a basic structure and treat it the English way for a good openability.

It is with gratitude that  I accept the award from CBBAG, and I am grateful for the encouragement this award provides me.

Echoes: Voices of People Living with Aids
1990 Fine Printing/Typographie 27.9 x 37 x 1 cm
Twenty broadsides printed letterpress, in handmade paper wrapper, collaboration with PWAs from across the United States.

The world struggles to cope with a global epidemic that challenges

our biases, our resources, and our ability to care for others. As the crises continues to spread and grow, we are confronted with numbers of infected people that increase geometrically and begin to lose meaning. Echoes was intended to allow people living with AIDS the opportunity to speak for themselves about their experiences. In this way, perhaps the disease could again be thought of in human terms.

None of the work I have done prepared me for the emotional burden

of inviting 16 people with AIDS into my life for several years. Some

of the participants died during the production of the project and yet,

I see the Echoes project as a celebration of life, and an affirmation of the basic goodness in people.

BOOKBINDER'S WAREHOUSE AB93 AWARD FOR FINE BINDING

Song of Songs
1992 Fine Binding/Reliure d'art 20.2 x 26.4 x 1.6 cm
Chieftain goatskin, onlays, and gold tooling.                                                  Chevre "Chieftain," mosaïques, et dorure à chaud.

Seven finishing tools were made especially for the creation of the binding design on this unusual version of the Song of Songs. I have,
in my use of animal disguises, tried to play along with the author's need for caution in his condemnation of the King. Solomon's polygamous and foreign ideas are represented by the peacock – a bird that Solomon imported – while the common and monogamous ravens represent the two lovers who are true to their faith and true to the natural ways of the land.

THE ART OF THE BOOK '93 DESIGN AWARD
Les Six Voies
1992 Fine Binding/Reliure d'art

Les Six Voies is a collaborative effort by six francophone women bookbinders, with various levels of experience, all living in Greater Montréal. The project was organised by Louise Genest. The title of the book means The Six Voices (or Ways) and the subtitle or theme is Les Mots (The Words). Each binder had one Signature to write and illustrate about the "Words"; any means of creativity was permitted as long as it was done by hand and could be reproduced faithfully so that each collaborator had her own copy to bind.

My fascination for the art of bookbinding stems namely from my love of books. I take great pride and pleasure in giving shape to an author's words and spirit, while adding my own personal vision of his or her work.

With Les Six Voies, my colleagues and I had the opportunity to act as both authors and bookbinders, drawing from each other's talent, imagination, and creativity. This collaboration was altogether a highly enjoyable and fulfilling experience.

Nicole Billard

A series of asymmetric parallels meandering over the pages, Les Six Voies allowed a bookbinder to wrap her own thought, using

traditional techniques while projecting a contemporary design. My binding tries to procure as much a tactile as a visual pleasure.

The meandering way "Vole" embossed on the covers, leads your finger tips through the different textures of the fine grained leather, polished, around onlays of dots. The binding should protect and preserve the book. Furthermore, the binding should be a significant extension of the creative illustrated and written content.

Christine Chartrand

Leather and paper are fascinating things which could offer so many possibilities into our project. Concerning this achievement, I preferred the use of an imaginative alphabet to a written statement. This alphabet was created and made from leather and paper. I also combined a few characters with the same structure into this form of statement. The way that the bookbinding is done you can easily see

the arrangement with the character as well as the imaginary alphabet.

Lise Dubois

The creation of Les Six Voies took place over several years. The project turned out to be a very stimulating experience because of the challenge it presented for each one of us.

Although we realized that it was a daring undertaking, the project's completion was proof of our persistence that had been nurtured by the friendship and support required for this type of creative venture by a group.

In view of the different approach taken by each of us, I chose a stark black-and-white binding that focussed on the contrast of forms rather than on the content of the book. I did not want to include more colour since a single decorative element sufficed to mirror the tones used in my signature.

Although the creative process was difficult and painstaking at times, the project was fascinating – an experience I would gladly repeat.

Louise Genest

In this project I tried a creative approach to the word: my section dealt with other aspects than the meaning or text. I decided upon three characteristics: the graphics as a unity of time and space, grammar as an organizer of thoughts, and calligraphy as a mastering of fine motor-eye coordination.

The binding conveyed the same approach: the title became the design and, hidden under flaps, a representation of my own section – a 3-D onlay. I chose boxcalf, a temperamental leather that responds beautifully to embossing. Technically this was the most difficult binding I ever did.

It is no doubt unusual for six professional bookbinders to join in creating a book. As part of my personal contribution I wanted, through my design, to emphasize this unique experience. The six hands are joined by small threads representing our cooperation. The circle and its inner sinuosities symbolize our different ways to express it.
