Contemporary Canadian Bookworks, 1995

An exhibition organized by the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild and shown at the Embassy of Canada, Tokyo, from 25 April to 9 June 1995 and the Kyoto International Community Centre Gallery, from 19 June to 30 June 1995.

The Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild is delighted to present in Tokyo during April, May, and June 1995 its exhibitionContemporary Canadian Bookworks. Organized by the Guild’s Exhibition Committee, jointly chaired by Susan Corrigan and Shelagh Smith, this exhibition displays examples of the fine work done by artists across Canada.

The Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild was founded in 1983. Its aims are to provide contact among those interested in the hand book arts, to provide access to education in the book arts, to promote greater awareness of the book arts among the general public, and to advocate and promote high standards of excellence in the book arts through exhibitions, workshops, lectures, programme meetings, and publications. The Guild has worked for twelve years to achieve these aims in Canada (with much success, I believe) and is delighted to have the opportunity to display the excellent work of many of its book artists in a totally different venue.

For the artist, the experience of creation and interpretation is often a solitary one. A life devoted to working in the arts, however, requires the stimulation of exposure to the work of other artists and to a wider public. The Art of the Book ’93, CBBAG’s second major juried exhibition, which opened in Toronto in 1993 and travelled across Canada to Winnipeg, Halifax, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, and Pointe Claire, Quebec, helped to provide such a stimulation in Canada. Contemporary Canadian Bookworks, displayed here in Tokyo at the Embassy of Canada and at the Kyoto International Community Centre Gallery, is based on that exhibition, but includes much additional material. It provides Canadian book artists with additional exposure to another sophisticated public, and offers to a new audience many varied examples of design bindings, fine printing, papermaking, calligraphy, box making, and artists’ books.

This exhibition, I believe, reveals an enormous depth and variety of inspiration. The items on display are offered with pride for your enjoyment and edification, each worthy of your time and study. I am delighted that, with the help and cooperation of the Embassy of Canada, the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild is able to present Contemporary Canadian Bookworks in Tokyo.

This exhibition originated in a request from the Embassy of Canada, Tokyo, Japan, to occupy their beautiful gallery for April and May of 1995. The curators began with a selection of some of the Canadian work that had been exhibited in The Art of the Book ’93 exhibition and added to that the work of other artists across Canada. To this end we viewed exhibitions involving the book arts (fine binding, fine printing, calligraphy, papermaking, box making, and artists’ books) which became known to us. We also consulted book artists in various parts of the country to locate others working in these fields.

In organizing Contemporary Canadian Bookworks, we did not attempt to be totally comprehensive. It would, for example, have been impossible to include the thousands of calligraphers across Canada utilizing the book format. As well, the art of printmaking (lithography, wood engraving, engraving, etching, etc.) as associated with book illustration is enormous and deserves an exhibition of its own. Student work is often shown only in the institution where it originates, to the loss of us all. In addition, a number of book artists were found too late for inclusion, and we do apologize to them. We hope to continue the search and to organize other invitational exhibitions.

In the course of the search, a few facts emerged. Book artists are widely dispersed across this vast country and feel very isolated. Some do not know any others in their province or region. They generally would love to talk to others about what they are trying to do.

Very few book artists support themselves solely on their art. Most supplement this income with teaching, book restoration, or other jobs. A multi-disciplinary approach to their art is frequent, with the result that many artists go on to other fields. Of the ones persisting, some may incorporate hand papermaking, binding, photography, or printmaking techniques with fine printing within their own private press. Most fine binders do forwarding, finishing, edge decoration, paper decorating, and boxmaking. In other countries the binder may send work out to others for leather paring, edge gilding, or marbling, but this is seldom possible in Canada. Calligraphers often utilize paper decorating, bookbinding techniques, and boxmaking.

One of the most encouraging facts encountered was the mini upsurge in interest in hand papermaking as the basis of art, whether using Japanese paper as the strata or as a decorative element, or using flax, cotton, or natural fibres in a sculptural context. Some of the strongest, most stimulating work we have seen has been in this field, and we have no doubt that we have only scratched the surface of the pool of work being created.

Design binders are still widely and thinly dispersed, the majority being in Quebec, with several in Ontario and British Columbia. Fine printers seem to be clustered in Ontario, with activity in British Columbia centred around the Alcuin Society. Artists’ books are hard to pinpoint geographically, but much of this activity would seem to fan out from the art schools, such as the Ontario College of Art and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

We are happy to say that there are groups in Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, and Halifax supporting each other through communicating their skills and areas of expertise. Mutual support to combat the rigours of isolation was one of the main purposes for which the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild was founded in 1983, and it remains a central focus.

For CBBAG, exhibitions have been a core means of promoting this interdependence and support. By finding each other, by seeing each others’ work, and by exhibiting work of the highest calibre created in the various fields of the book arts, CBBAG hopes to encourage book artists to persist.

In this exhibition we are communicating to a knowledgeable and sophisticated audience that the Canadian book arts are worthy of note. The organizers hope that the exhibition has been as pleasurable an experience for you, the audience, as it has been for us.

Shelagh Smith & Susan Corrigan
April 1995
