Course Fee: $690 members / $750 non-members
Materials Fee: $50.00 payable to the instructor
Prerequisite: BB3 or permission of instructor
MAXIMUM ENROLLMENT: 5 students


This six-day course core curriculum will introduce the basic concepts and techniques used in decorating leather-bound books. The course will cover: blind and gold tooling; titling; several methods of inlay and onlay; historical decorative tools; and typical elements of design. Participants will try their hand at various techniques using an assortment of different leathers.


Betsy Palmer Eldridge apprenticed as a bookbinder in Hamburg, Germany, studied finishing with Jules Fache in Paris, and worked in conservation with Carolyn Horton and Associates in New York in the 1960s. She has had her own Studio in Toronto since 1975 and has taught courses and workshops in bookbinding and conservation since 1984. She has been active in professional organizations both nationally and internationally.
