Manuscript books written on vellum used "furniture", i.e. clasps to keep them closed and bosses to protect the cover surfaces. In this one-day workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of fabricating with brass, sawing, annealing and riveting, as they make clasps and bosses and attach them to the boards of the Gothic book binding. This is a companion workshop to Introduction to Gothic Binding 2019WKSP-01.

Mary K. McIntyre is a Toronto-based sculptor and metalsmith who loves the spontaneous, collaborative way that metal responds when shaped under the hammer. McIntyre studied at OCADU University and under Bronfman Award-winning silversmith Lois Etherington Betteridge. Her teaching experience includes workshops on silversmithing, and fabricating metalwork for the artist’s book, at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, the Metal Arts Guild of Canada, and the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild (Toronto and Vancouver chapters). Her work has been exhibited in Vancouver, Saskatoon, Toronto, Ottawa and Fredericton; it is held in private collections in Canada and the USA, and in the Canadian Contemporary Silver Collection at the Art Gallery of Guelph.
