Sign up today to spend a few hours exploring the creativity and structure of traditional Japanese stab bindings!

 

The focus will be on the 4 foundational stitching patterns: the Four-Hole, the Nobel, the Hemp-Leaf, and the Tortoise Shell. Once you have mastered the four foundations, you will be amply prepared to experiment with your own design for stitching patterns.

 

So, dig into your paper stash to find those special pieces you’ve been saving and join in to make 4 books in one workshop!

Required tools:

Bone Folder

Small brush for glue

Sewing needle, preferably tapestry or blunt-ended needle

Awl

Scissors

Ruler

Pencil

Scalpel or X-Acto knife to cut paper

Cutting mat

2 small bulldog clips or equivalent to hold paper


Optional tools:

Pliers

90-degree ruler

 

Materials required:

  • ·  4 sheets – Kozoke paper or other plain Japanese paper approx. size 25x37 inches or thin paper
  • ·   4 half sheets or 2 full sheets – Decorative Japanese paper such as Chiyogami or thin paper
  • ·    4 metres Heavy thread or Pearl Cotton thread (#5 is a good weight)
  • ·    PVA or other glue
  • ·    Scrap paper 8.5x11


Marilyn Book has an LIT and a BA in Communications. She has retired after spending 30 years working in the public education libraries from elementary to college levels where she has led several extra-curricular classes on bookbinding with students.  She has been a member of CBBAG since 2013 and is pleased to have earned her Certificate of Completion in 2019.


ONLINE WORKSHOP PROCESS:

The instructor will be in contact when registration is completed to share any necessary directions about materials preparation and the meeting invitation link.

Materials should be prepared in advance of the workshop which allows participants to take the best advantage of the live format.

Technical requirements for participation:

·       Access to the internet and to the Zoom application

·       Screen large enough to follow instructor’s video feed (cell phone is not ideal)

·       Microphone or Headset / Webcam

Participant-requested cancellations will be accepted up to 3 days prior to the published cut-off date for registration and will be subject to a 10% cancellation fee (a minimum of $5). After that, the full fee will be forfeited. In the event of the workshop being cancelled by CBBAG, the workshop fee will be fully refunded. Membership fees included in the non-member fee above are not refundable.
