This is a live workshop and participants will get the most out of it by attending the live sessions, but it will be recorded and available for the registrants to view for 90 days until January 16, 2023.

In this online class, we will explore the Carousel Book. This structure first appeared during WWII for children’s books. The book uses layers of paper as a method of displaying images and narrative of a story in a non-traditional way. While in this workshop, you will learn how a few simple folds and cuts work to create this unique storytelling structure.

In session one, we will learn about the structure, look at some examples, and fold the paper accordions.

Between sessions, students will plan their structure and decorate the layers of their own carousel books.

In session two, we will assemble the decorated layers and add the covers to complete our books.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

Unless noted, all materials are grain direction parallel to the spine. Dimensions below are (height) x (width).

Text weight paper (drawing paper) 18 x 24” (45.72 cm x 60.06 cm), cut into twelve 6” x 24” pieces (15.24 cm x 60.96 cm)

Printer paper / wastepaper

Glue stick or PVA

4 sheets cover weight paper 8.5 x 11 grain long (21.59 cm x 27.94 cm)

2 pieces mat board for covers, 6” x 5” grain long (15.24 cm x 12.70 cm)

Materials for decoration (to be discussed in session 1)

BIOGRAPHY

Andrew Huot is a Canadian book artist, bookbinder, printer, and conservator living in Atlanta, Georgia, where he operates Big River Bindery, a studio for bookmaking, letterpress printing, and book conservation. He holds a Masters in Book Arts from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and a BS in Printmaking from Portland State University. His artists’ books use photographs, linoleum cuts, and text to share the humorous side of everyday life around us. His artists’ books are in collections across the country, from the Art Institute of Chicago to Yale University. Andrew teaches online and in his own studio, at the University of Illinois School of Information, and workshops across the US at the John C Campbell Folk School, BookArtsLA, the International Preservation Studies Center, and the Guild of Book Workers, among others.

Participant-requested cancellations will be accepted up to 3 days prior to the published cut-off date for registration and will be subject to a 10% cancellation fee (a minimum of $5). After that, the full fee will be forfeited. In the event of the workshop being cancelled by CBBAG, the workshop fee will be fully refunded. Membership fees included in the non-member fee above are not refundable.
