This is a live workshop, but it will be recorded and available for the registrants to view until Nov 3, 2022.

Once your book or prints are completed, how do you protect and house them?

In addition to protecting work, housing provides an opportunity to guide the reading experience and incorporate additional content or design elements.

We’ll cover a selection of simple options in this workshop, making a nested set for a three-dimensional item (using a deck of cards or the equivalent).

The housing we will build are the following: a wrapper band, a 4-flap wrapper, and a self-closing wrapper.

We will also examine other options, including pre-made portfolios and boxes, that can be adapted.

Resources on materials, tutorials, and conservation considerations will be shared.

Our models will be small and constructed out of paper, but they will be good reference for scaled up versions and future projects.

NOTE: This workshop has been previously taught for other organizations in an extended version titled Paper Packaging.

Tools:

Bone folder

Scissors

Awl or piercing tool

Ruler, 12” metal

Pencil

Glue stick

Cutting mat

X-acto knife

Right triangle

Self-centering C-Thru ruler, or other gridded ruler 12” (optional, but helpful)

Japanese hole punch (optional)

Materials:

One deck of playing cards, poker size, 3.5” high x 2.5” wide x about 5/8” wide

We’ll use this to build a set of nested packaging around, so we all work from the same size item. Please note - playing cards come in various sizes, but the pre-cut paper is based on the standard size of a deck of cards for poker.

OR an alternate option: build a small form the same size as above (height and width and the same thickness) from foam core, corrugated board, or cardboard. You can just stack a bunch of pieces together with glue stick. This is needed to build a form, around which we’ll create our packaging.

Double-sided tape: ¼” (or ½” works also) such as 3M #415 double-sided tape

Paper:

The grain of the cut papers should be parallel to the height which is underlined in the list below. For this workshop, they are all short grain.

For the nested packaging set please pre-cut:

All of the papers for the nested packaging set should be 65 or 80 lb card or cover weight paper

.

A. Wrapper band:

1 sheet 2.5” high x 8.75” wide paper

1 sheet 3.5” high x 7” wide paper

B. 4-flap wrapper:

1 sheet 2.5” high x 11” wide paper

1 sheet 3.5” high x 8.5” wide paper

C. Self-closing wrapper:

1 sheet 2.75” high x 11” wide paper

1 sheet 3.75” high x 11” wide paper
